What we know so far about the shooting at the Kansas City Super Bowl rally

On Wednesday, one individual lost their life, and 22 others sustained injuries. Two individuals have been detained for questioning in connection with the incident, but as of now, no charges have been brought against them.


A person was fatally shot and over 20 others were injured during a post-rally celebration in Kansas City following the Chiefs' Super Bowl win. Although specifics leading to the gunfire are still emerging, NBC News has gathered some initial details on the incident.

The shooting occurred after a celebratory rally for the Kansas City Chiefs, where thousands of enthusiastic fans gathered in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, adorned in the team's colors of red, white, and gold. More than 800 law enforcement officers were deployed in and around the rally area to ensure safety, according to authorities.

The shooting incident happened shortly after the rally ended, around 1:50 p.m., as confirmed by Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves on Thursday. By just after 2 p.m., the police department announced on social media that gunfire had been reported west of Union Station.


At first, authorities stated that they had apprehended two individuals armed with weapons and that there were several victims. In a subsequent announcement, Graves clarified that three individuals were in custody and being investigated, though they refrained from labeling them as suspects.

Later on Thursday, Graves disclosed that two of the detained individuals were minors, while a spokesperson from the Kansas City Police Department mentioned that the third person was released after it was confirmed they had no involvement in the shooting incident.


Later on Wednesday night, Graves reported that one individual had passed away and over 20 had sustained gunshot injuries.

Graves provided an update on Thursday, confirming that the number of fatalities remained at one and that 22 others had been wounded.

She mentioned, "At least half of our casualties are below the age of 16," also noting that the oldest victim is 47.

Details Regarding the Injured

Those wounded during the shooting and its ensuing chaos were transported to various hospitals.

Saint Luke’s Hospital attended to five patients. As of 10 a.m. Thursday, one gunshot victim was in critical condition. Additionally, the hospital treated four individuals with minor injuries sustained while fleeing the scene, all of whom were subsequently discharged.

University Health hospital cared for a total of 12 individuals: eight gunshot victims from the Union Station incident and four others who sustained injuries not caused by gunfire.

As of Thursday morning, two of the gunshot victims remain in critical condition while one is stable. The remaining five gunshot victims have been released. Among the non-gunshot patients, three have also been discharged.

Children’s Mercy Hospital provided treatment to 12 patients, of whom 11 were children aged 6 to 15. Nine of these children had gunshot wounds, and all are expected to recover, according to the hospital.

As of Thursday, three of the victims remain hospitalized, while the rest have been discharged, as confirmed by a hospital spokesperson.
